Sequence Board Game Rules
Everything you need to know to play the Sequence card game, whether at the table or online with friends on Sequo.
Objective
The goal of Sequence is to form sequences, rows of five chips in a line on the board. Chips can be placed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The first team or player to complete the required number of sequences wins the game.
Setup
- Players: 2 to 12, split into 2 or 3 teams of equal size (the host sets the team size, up to 4 per team). For example: 4 players form 2 teams of 2, 6 players form 2 teams of 3 or 3 teams of 2, and 12 players form 3 teams of 4.
- Board: A 10×10 grid with playing card images. Each card (except Jacks) appears twice on the board.
- Cards: Two standard 52-card decks shuffled together (104 cards total).
- Hand size: 2 players: 7 cards each. 3–4 players: 6 cards. 5–6 players: 5 cards. 7–9 players: 4 cards. 10–12 players: 3 cards.
- Chips: Each team gets a color. In Sequo, chips are placed automatically when you play a card.
Taking a Turn
- Select a card from your hand.
- Place your team's chip on a matching empty space on the board.
- A replacement card is drawn automatically from the deck.
- Play passes to the next player.
If you hold a dead card (both matching board spaces are occupied), you may discard it before playing to draw a fresh card. Only one discard is allowed per turn.
Jacks: Special Cards
Jacks do not appear on the board. Instead, they have special powers:
Two-Eyed Jack (Wild Card)
Place your chip on any empty space on the board. Use these strategically to complete sequences or block opponents.
One-Eyed Jack (Remove Card)
Remove any opponent's chip from the board, as long as it is not part of a completed sequence. Great for breaking up an opponent's run.
Corner Spaces
The four corner spaces on the board are free for every team. They count as occupied for all players and can be used to complete any sequence. This means you only need four of your own chips in a row next to a corner to form a sequence.
Winning Conditions
Sequo supports three win conditions you can choose when creating a game:
- First Sequence: The first team to complete one sequence wins.
- Two Sequences: The first team to complete two sequences wins.
- Play All Cards: Play continues until no moves remain. The team with the most sequences wins.
Sequence Intersections
Two sequences belonging to the same team may share at most one chip. A single chip can be part of up to two sequences, as long as they run in different directions (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal). However, if a chip is already part of two completed sequences, it cannot be used to form a third.
✓ Valid Intersection
Two sequences (horizontal and vertical) share one chip at the center. This is allowed, each sequence counts.
✗ Invalid Intersection
A diagonal line of five chips passes through the same center chip, but it does not count as a third sequence because the shared chip is already part of two completed sequences.
